BMW certainly has a knack for inventing new segments. As they’ve demonstrated with the aggressively styled X6 – a 2009 Auto Style Award winner – being the only-of-its-kind does wonders for the desirability factor. But unlike the X6, the all-new 5 Series Gran Turismo lends a high degree of everyday practicality.
The 5 Series GT is a faithful amalgam of comfort and convenience from several models, imbued with the excellent driving dynamics of all BMWs. From the A-pillar forward, the 5 Series GT resembles the flagship 7 Series, while previewing the 5 Series redesign. Between the B and C pillars is a cross pollination of 7 Series leg room and X5 head room. And with the seats folded, the 5 Series GT has more cargo capacity than the 5 Series wagon. The result a completely new definition for “grand touring”... Little did we know were doing it wrong.
